David Kinsey Statement

Back

From 2002-2005, I went through an unfortunate painting hiatus (I just didn’t have a pocket book for it).  When I came back to the canvas, I addressed it with the attitude- “Please just let me melt into you!” and “The more paint, the merrier!”.   The 2005/ early 2006 work seemed to be expressions of that experience, with a kind of gluttonous outpouring of impasto paint and expressionistic strokes.  I strove to really push the visceral properties with no holds bar.  There are a couple of paintings in this exhibition that come from that celebration-spurt.

With time, came a more patient approach.  I began to meditate on former comments that were discussed about my previous paintings, such as: the notion of incorporating more of my drawing abilities, dichotomies, structure and most importantly - process.  So some of the newer paintings may have the white still showing with actual pencil marks and lines.  A few dichotomies include: areas of both thin paint near thick paint.  The skeletal structure starts to show through with some geometric/pixel-looking lines and shapes.   The construction of these paintings are also varied in approach: from either using tape to begin with, to blindly thrusting thick paint on, to glazing, to whatever seems to coincide with my mental temperature.
In terms of image, I never premeditate exactly what will happen, although the abstract nature of geometric and organic shapes have taken on a more specific quality than ever before. Next to formal issues of painting, there also stands; ideas of struggle, beauty, automatism, sensuality, questioning control, internalization and paint itself.  These all seem to be pinned down by my deep connection with the act of painting.  My hope is that this passion and connection resonates at the highest level.
